I have been considering building a boat with my son. I think it would be a great project for the two of us. He is still to young to do much but I want to get him involved and it would be good for his ego to see something like this come together. (look what I made.....) I have been thinking about either a layout or a BBSB. I have never built something of this size but I have made some furniture. I have a bandsaw, planner, table saw, and all the standard hand tools.

Which would be a better 1st boat and would I need any additional tools? Also, what would it cost to build one? I really don't have room to store a BBSB and I think I would be able to hang the layout in the garage during the offseason.

O.K., I found a pic of it....well humm....I AM NOT experienced in layout boats, but this is just a casual observation and my opinion...all things considered I would go with the BBSB based on the following:

The layout is kinda of a "speciality" boat, in that it is put in place and anchored. You basically sit in it and shoot....and for a youngster, it might be cool to build, but the instant gratification of "let's go put it in the water and cruise around" just won't be there with it...but....if you build the BBSB, then it is kinda two-fold for your young-in respect to being able to shoot out of it, AND providing instant gratification after it is built by throwing a small ob on it and going for a test drive if you will....

I think I will NEED both...lol, but if I were doing it as a project with a young-in, then I would do the BBSB. It also resembles a boat more than a layout does. Anyway, just my rationale..

Either way, it will be a fantastic project for you and your boy!!

Good Luck and keep us posted on what you decide!

Cheers!

I have a big boat to use as a tender for the layout but I like the "Idea" of the classic hunting boat. The big problem with the BBSB is that they are really a 1 man boat. I guess I will have to build 2 of them if I go that route!!! Layout hunting is a team effort which is what I am looking forward to in a couple of years. I'm just thinking that this will be a good way to get him involved before he is old enough to really hunt. He is really in to building things right now (I can’t keep scrap wood around the house) and I want to tap that desire while it is still there. I’m also assuming that there are less structural issues involved with a layout (for a first time builder) considering it is not powered.

I understand, then I would make a double seater in the layout boat if my reasons are not issues or concerns with you. I would build both...lol But like you said, I think the traditional BBSB boat design is sexier than the layout, but for what I want to do, I will need the layout. The BBSB will work in some applications where I hunt, but I'm with you in the regard of having two persons in the boat. My girlfriend Carolyn would skin me alive if I didn't take her ducking.....lol She absolutely loves watching the birds work and pulling the trigger!! I agree with you as well regarding construction of the layout, it does appear as if it is less complicated in design/construction. Whichever you decide to build, I'm sure you will enjoy hours of bonding time with your son. How old is your Cub if you don't mind me asking?

Cheers!

he is almost 6 and I have a girl that is almost 9. Both go out with me but neither is ready to hunt. I not going to push them to hunt (one or two trips a year right now). I plan on letting the fire build on its own by giving them quick samples.

A barnegat is a great boat, And can be made for 2 people. Both are great boats layouts and sneak boats however the sneak would be fun for even fishing in the summer. Be sure and show us progress which ever you choose.

My hunting partner and I decided to build some layouts this winter. One is complete, 1 is at 75%, and the last one is at 25%. As far as tools, I am an avid woodworker, but you don't need a shop full of tools (it doesn't hurt though). A good jigsaw, sanders, screw guns and a drill. We were more worried about fiberglassing, but that isn't as hard as I thought it would be. I can email a bunch of pictures of the build if anyone is interested.

the easy way is to open a Photobucket account (it's free) http://photobucket.com/ then upload the picture to Photobucket. Under each picture is a IMG tag line that you copy and paste into the post. Doing this makes it a picture in the post but in the code it is just a link so there is no server space used up on this site.

example: A can decoy I made.
this is the code copied from photbucket (with brackets missing around the IMG so the code will show)

IMG http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p313/BAMAH20FWLER/P1010024.jpg /IMG

Now with the brackets:
