Has anyone ever layout boat hunted on the Hudson river? If no one has, do you think it will work? The southern part of the Hudson has to be a 1/4 mile wide if not more in some places and I have been seeing loads of divers from bluebills to redheads all season.

I sure wouldn't know why it wouldnt work, Just check and make sure there are no laws that permit it.

We have layout shot the Maumee in places. The biggest thing to watch for, other than the laws, is the current. you may have to plan your days according to the wind, moving with the current, unless it's a light moving river.

Where would I find laws AGAINST or PERMITTING layout boat hunting, The local DEC? The local township area where I plan to hunt? The Hudson is a tidal waterway I wonder if in comes under federal guidelines like the fishing does?

It's fast, real fast when the tide is coming in or out it can runs 1-2 feet difference in a few hours. I was thinking I would need to set up on the leeward side of a cove. I see all kinds of diver ducks now that I'm looking for them even a few sea ducks at times.

Leeward side of a cove would be good too,but remember, you're trying to set up with the wind over your back. And for the most part, you want the decoys to be set in this same fasion of thought. With a current, you'll be setting decoys with the current, not the wind, especially if it's working as you say. If the river runs west to east, I would say you're pretty well stuck hunting a predominently west wind. Northwest, southwest will work out.
You'll use a front anchor to keep the boat angled, but in a quick moving current I'd prefer not to turn the boat into the current anything over 45degrees. If you have a large enough calm patch from a cove or break, use that to your advantage, but you'll still be setting up with the wind in order to have the birds work the spread.
I haven't dealt with the currents caused by tidal waters either, so this could play hell on the setup one way or another. You might even want to consider dropping the layout in the water during the summer, try to get an idea of where, when, and how you'll be able to hunt, keeping in mind the different winds. Best to figure these things out when it's warm and the water won't kill ya.

Wow that's a lot to figure in. The river runs north to south and the tide comes in north and goes out south. I can use the tide charts to find the direction and time of flow and also slack tide time and length then just check for wind direction and hunt the days when things come together. It might take some effort but I think it will work. Now all I need is to get my own layout boat and some diver decoys.

LOL Once I get something substantial working I would welcome the help.I saw some common eiders and oldsquaws for the first time this year as well as bluebills, cans, buffies, golden's and all the mergs as well as blacks!!!.I keep my binocs in my truck all the time now, I may have waterfowl fever I never really looked for them before.
I use to hunt ducks with my brother and friends when we were younger back in Erie Pa.Now more recently my brother started back up and got me back into it the last three years with 3-4 trips a year back to Erie to hunt. This was my first year layout boat hunting on the lake and I may have got bit by the layout bug so it got me to thinking it might work closer to home here in New York on the Hudson.
